MDG Resolution

Rosendale Town Board

Resolution 7-2007-#1

Resolution - Supporting The United Nations Millennium Development Goals

WHEREAS, the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 proclaimed a set of time-bound and measurable goals and targets for combating poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women, called the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and

WHEREAS, the Summit's Millennium Declaration also outlined a wide range of commitments toward human rights, good governance and democracy, and

WHEREAS, the Millennium Development Goals are summarized as follows:

  1. Reduce extreme poverty and hunger by half;
  2. Achieve universal primary education;
  3. Empower women and promote equality between women and men;
  4. Reduce under-five mortality by two-thirds;
  5. Reduce maternal mortality by three-quarters;
  6. Reverse the spread of diseases, especially HIV/AIDS and malaria;
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability;
  8. Create a global partnership, and

WHEREAS, the MDGs provide a framework for the entire UN system to work coherently together towards a common end, and

WHEREAS, the United Nations in nearly every developing country is uniquely positioned to advocate for change, connect countries to knowledge and resources, and help coordinate broader efforts at the country level, and

WHEREAS, while the world is making progress toward the MDGs, this progress is uneven and slow, so that a large majority of nation will reach the MDGs only if they get substantial support, including advocacy, expertise and resources from the outside.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Town Board of the Town of Rosendale pledges its support for the United Nation Millennium Goals.
